Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are now beginning the process of preparing for class placement, which takes many hours on the part of the entire instructional team. We have a placement practice, which does not allow for requests for individual teachers. This policy helps to ensure proper placements for all of our students, allows for equity and provides our instructional staff the opportunity to utilize their expertise to determine your child’s proper placement. Placements are developed with great care.
Over the past few years, we have implemented a range of learning environments to provide for a variety of learning styles. When making placement decisions, we will continue to look at a variety of criteria:
- Academic needs
- Social needs
- Behavioral needs
- Student services
- Heterogeneous groupings
- Learning styles
- Teaching styles
In cases where a child has special needs or particular concerns exist, parent consultation with the principal needs to take place by May 1, 2024. Concerns should be in writing and placed in a sealed envelope addressed to the building administrator. Elementary class lists will be mailed on August 19th by the school principals. Secondary student schedules will be mailed out during the week of August 19th.
Class groupings are made for the purpose of increasing instructional effectiveness, maximizing resources for children and enhancing their learning. These are some of the many issues we review and discuss. It takes months for us to arrive at closure on class placements for the children. Thank you in advance for supporting our placement policy.
Magnet Schools were eliminated last year. Transfer requests between schools are not permitted unless deemed a hardship and authorized by the Superintendent of Schools. Transfer of students between buildings creates imbalance in class sizes and negatively impacts efficient delivery of transportation services.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathleen Davis
Interim Superintendent of Schools
