To Our Utica City School District Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I must share the news of another tragic loss in our school community. This heartbreaking event, occurring just days after a previous loss, challenges us in ways words cannot fully express. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of our student, whose memory we honor and mourn.
In the wake of these tragedies, it is crucial to address the growing concern of gun violence, both in New York State and nationwide. It is a challenge that we must confront head-on, ensuring that such acts of violence do not become a norm in our community. Our response must be strong and unwavering.
We have implemented several critical measures to enhance the safety and security of our students and staff. This includes the integration of additional interventions and security protocols in our school settings.
Most notably, Proctor High School is now a closed campus to ensure the safety of our students and staff—a decision I made with the guidance and support of our administrative team. Currently, there is no direct threat to Proctor High School (or any other schools within the district), but as a precautionary measure, additional police presence and security protocols have been instituted. No one is allowed in without an appointment, and security is posted at each door. The UPD and civilian security strictly monitor our single point of entry for students and visitors, and anyone coming into the building must go through the metal detectors and put their personal belongings through the x-ray machine.
We have fortified our support team at Proctor by adding Probation and SNUG. They join our existing system of care partners—Safe Schools, Hillside, OnPoint, ICAN, and Young Scholars—in providing comprehensive support to our students.
At this juncture, parental involvement is vital. We implore parents to actively participate in ensuring the safety of our students. This includes checking your child's backpack, reporting any concerns to the school or the UPD, and ensuring that weapons found are turned over to the authorities. Together, we can strive to reclaim the safety and peace of our city.
In these challenging times, our dedicated crisis team of counselors, school psychologists, and trained staff is prepared to offer counseling and bereavement support services. We understand the profound impact these events have on our school community, and we stand ready to assist in any way possible.
This is a time for us to come together as a school and community to support those in need. We believe in the resilience of our students, staff, and community members. Together, we will navigate these tragedies, offering support and strength to each other.
Let us be clear: we will not let violence define or overtake our community. We stand united in our commitment to safety, peace, and the well-being of every member of our school district.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Dr. Kathleen Davis
