Utica City School District's Volunteer Reading Tutor Program kicked off its 54th year! With 36 volunteer readers the program has made a huge impact for decades! Last year the program served 263 students with 554 hours of reading time. Volunteers were recognized this morning for their dedicated years of service to our students, accepted building assignments, and watched a heartfelt video made for them by the Tech Club students at Jefferson Elementary.
The Volunteer Reading Tutor Program was started by Mrs. Kitty Kernan in 1969. The program continues to thrive 50 years later under Director Marytheresa Belutis and Cathy Kernan, Executive Secretary, with the help of Mrs. Vanessa Rejrat, AIS Facilitator, for the district.
Dr. Spence, Mr. Falchi, and Mrs. Van Duren were present to offer their thanks to the volunteers for their years of service and dedication to generations of students.
