Students from Watson Williams Elementary School and local officials took part in the national Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, which recognizes the historic steps Ruby Bridges took on November 14, 1960, when the six-year-old first-grader became one of the first Black students to integrate New Orleans, La. public schools.
Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges took courageous actions to initiate the desegregation of New Orleans’ public schools. Sixty-three years later, Ruby’s vision is for future generations of leaders to end racism and all forms of bullying, one step at a time. In 2018, AAA School Safety Patrollers in northern California laid the foundation for this student-led movement to promote safety and inclusivity in schools. In just five years, the national event has grown to include over 1,000 schools and more than 500,000 participants.
